Project Brief

Claira AI leverages the latest advancements in competency science and machine learning to unlock the full potential of an organization's workforce. Using this technology, Claira AI can analyze vast amounts of real-world data, uncover hidden patterns, and propose actions that lead to improved outcomes.

In collaboration with the Chief Product Officer of Claira AI, our team of 5 designers was tasked with creating a customer-requested feature, "Role Matrix." This feature will provide leaders with actionable insights to drive the organization towards optimal performance.

Feature Goals

The project began with a discovery phase, which included a kickoff meeting with the Chief Product Officer and an examination of the company's existing website and design system. The team was tasked with creating a system that would address the following questions:

Questions2

Establishing the Framework

To determine the optimal framework for addressing these inquiries, we drew inspiration from a skills chart created by Josh Bersin, a renowned HR and workplace industry analyst. This approach not only enabled us to design a dynamic user experience, but also provided a foundation for the user flows.

Streamling the Path to Success

Our navigation framework illustrates how users navigate through the application, whether using a top-down or bottom-up approach. This provides a clear and straightforward process, triggered by specific user inputs. These inputs, such as job, role, capabilities, and/or skills, are used to predict a result.

User-Flow-5

Empathizing with the User

By immersing ourselves in our user's journey, needs, and perspectives, we were able to create an archetype of our users, who we found to be primarily managers and executives. This approach helped us gain a deeper understanding of our users and improve the user experience.

Balancing Automation and Control

We mapped out the information hierarchy to gain insight into the user's mental model and minimize the number of steps required for a given inquiry. We also carefully evaluated the balance between manual and predictive search methods to create an efficient and uncluttered solution that empowers leaders to make quick decisions.

Concept Iterations

The team conducted low-fidelity concepting sessions and generated various ideas to develop different systems. A preview of the Role Matrix was presented to the Chief Product Officer, Claira AI's customers, and the company's subject matter expert. Through usability testing and discussions with the Claira AI team, we received valuable feedback which we used to iterate and refine our designs. Feedback from the stakeholders and customers can be found in the accompanying slides:

More Visibility for Effective Decision Making

We developed multiple solutions to best identify those responsible for specific tasks or decisions, identify the best candidates for certain positions, and determine available opportunities for an employee.

Top-down Guided Search

To reduce user recall and promote recognition, a customized series of actions and options were created. These cues define a set of responsibilities for the user to generate the best matches. Users also have the option to add "tags" to an employee, thereby improving the accuracy of search results.

Bottom-up Guided Search - Talent Search

Customized results allow users to quickly identify the best candidates and avoid decision paralysis. Additionally, with increased visibility into relevant data, key management can use actionable business intelligence to support backfilling or hiring efforts.

Bottom-up Guided Search - Growth Search

Personalized options provide valuable insights that empower employees to take initiative on their professional growth. This leads to greater self-awareness as users can assess opportunities on-demand.

Employee-Breakdownv3

A breakdown of an employee's skill set enables users to clearly identify areas of improvement, fostering a proactive and curious mindset.

I also created tablet version of the application. This helped me understand how the design would look, function, and identify any potential usability issues on the tablet device.

The Impact

"I think everything's fantastic... like everything was very clearly explained. The iterations that you guys went through in terms of the feedback that I got from the client, my feedback, user testing it all makes makes a ton of sense to me. I'd love to sort of just get in there and play with it and start building and watching more users start playing with the real app and learn from there. [Also] the presentation with the clients went over really well."

   - Chief Product Officer

Collaborating with the Claira AI team on this client-requested feature was a great experience. The final product was well-received by the Chief Product Officer. Enhancing visibility into crucial information for mid-to-senior level employees enables faster and more precise business decisions, while also giving leaders a clearer view of their growth prospects and ultimately strengthening the company's workforce.
